2012 Journal:

December 9, 2012: Not a bad day for a December ride, but it got a little windy on the return home. Tried riding to the north first to avoid the wind later, not sure it worked. Was thinking today that I remember when I cold actually ride a bike ! lol. Just normal off season lack of seat time and also wearing all the layers doesn't help. Pretty descent ride, rode some hills, so it's not a surprise I was tired. Distance: 26.91 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 71, Ave Speed: 16.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,856.68 miles

December 2, 2012: Really nice day for this tim of the year even if the sun never made it out. It was a hazy day that looked like it was going to snow, but it was pretty nice other wise. It did get pretty cold down by the river, and I hurried to get out of there! Distance: 32.15 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 152, Ave Cadence: 79, Ave Speed: 17.5 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,829.77 miles

November 22, 2012: Pretty nice day for November, got a quick ride in, felt pretty tired but nice to be outside. Need to check, looks like I missed a ride inbetweem this one and one on 10 November. Distance: 28.17 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 145, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 16.4 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,797.62 miles

November 10, 2012: Getting to be a tough time of the year to ride, although when dressed well, it really was quite comfortable today. Not a lot of power in the riding, I think the extra clothes and the long riding year start to wear a bit by now. Some nice newly paved roads in Little Compton. Really some great riding in this area. Distance: 30.90 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 133, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 16.4 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,738.55 miles

November 3, 2012: Decided to go for a ride today even though it was cool and breezy. Never know if there will be many more nice days to ride and this fall is shaping up to be cooler than last year. Decided to head to Horseneck Beach to check out storm damage from Hurricane Sandy. There was some destruction but looks like they didn't get hit as badly as I had thought from the news reports. The biggest damage seemed to be on the causeway to Gooseberry Island which was ripped up pretty good. It was clear that the ocean over washed East and West Beach Roads again but it didn't look like there was any more road destruction that was done with Hurricane Irene last year. I also rode to Acoaxet and the road near Elephant Rock Beach was also over run by the ocean. It tore through the dunes at 5 or 6 spots and clearly had covered the road with sand. Didn't seem to be much road damage, but there was a "new" salt water pond near the northern terminus of the road and the houses down that end had some water and yard damage. I rode my older climbing bike, the Trek 5500 today as didn't want to risk a flat on my aero wheels on the Madone. Also, this time of the year the 5500 is more stable in the wind. The Madone may be done for the season. Distance: 37.10 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 16.5 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,738.55 miles

October 27, 2012: Today was a really nice morning to ride, mid 50's and no wind .. well until the second half of my ride where I felt like I was into the wind everywhere. There were a few riders out, not as many as the summer. I felt really good riding unlike yesterday when I felt sluggish and slow. Had a couple sections of riding hard, then a lot of sections of just coasting. Not many days like this left. . Distance: 40.32 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 70, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: 183 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,701.45 miles

October 26, 2012: Was able to finish work early today so I came home to get a ride in. Was a bit chilly and while there was blue sky, I seem to have been under a black cloud the whole way. Was a bit windy, but still nice to get an outside ride in. . Distance: 29.71 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 74, Ave Speed: 17.2 mph, Ave Power: 176 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,661.13 miles

October 20, 2012: The weather was pretty nice today after a couple weeks of cool and wet weather. Was able to take advantage of the sun and warmth to get a long ride in. Not sure how many more of those I'll get as cold weather can't be far away. The only think wrong today was a little wind. Luckily I made it home before the fog rolled back in. Distance: 42.94 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 18.0 mph, Ave Power: 185 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,631.42 miles

October 8, 2012: Well two days in a row with thermal shirts, arm warmers and a hat. Luckily still in shorts and no jacket or gloves yet but it definitely is getting to be fall time. Got another shortish ride in today, not as cold as yesterday, but not summer either! At least it's not the trainer yet! Oh and obviously my altimeter wasn't correct today. I didn't ride 120 ft below sea level. Distance: 23.65 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 149, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 18.0 mph, Ave Power: 193 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,588.48 miles

October 7, 2012: Boy, today was a chilly morning to ride. Was only 49 when I started so I wore a thermal shirt, undershirt and arm warmers. After a few minutes of freezing, I warmed up and overall the ride wasn't too bad. I do seem to have a minor chest cold brewing though and I could feel that being a problem when I rode hard for a short section. As a result, I cut my ride shorter than I planned and hopefully it will not be a problem. We'll see .. . Distance: 22.20 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 150, Ave Cadence: 79, Ave Speed: 17.8 mph, Ave Power: 204 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,564.83 miles

October 5, 2012: Really nice fall day out today. Had to ride short though as I needed to get the lawn cut and a bunch of other things. Was good to get out though. Haven't ridden enough so I am starting to want to get back out again. Not good when the weather hasn't been great. Distance: 20.62 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 17.9 mph, Ave Power: 181 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,542.63 miles

September 22, 2012:Was a beautiful afternoon for a ride, took it easy and enjoyed riding around Dartmouth and Horseneck Beach. Saw a few riders out, but not as many as you'd think. I did get dive bombed by a giant hawk in Wesport. As I was riding through a tree covered area I heard a giant crashing sound above me and looked up to see a hawk with at least a four or 5 foot wing span taking flight from the trees. He swooped dow to about 6 feet over my head and then flew with me for about 15 seconds before he took off in another direction. Luckily I must not have look like a good dinner! Distance: 35.64 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 17.7 mph, Ave Power: 177 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,522.01 miles

September 16, 2012: Cool ride this AM, first day in arm warmers for the fall season.... too soon. Doesn't look at this rate that we'll have a warm fall like last year ... then again, you never know. Good ride to Sakonnet Point, didn't ride very hard, but felt pretty strong and set a PR near the end of the ride on Old Bulgarmarsh road. Humm, funny how when you don't try sometimes you are faster! Distance: 34.07 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 148, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 16.6 mph, Ave Power: 195 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,486.37 miles

September 15, 2012: Little rain this AM, then it cleared out so i didn't get to ride until later. That was OK as it was chilly first thing the morning. Decided to ride to Dartmouth then Horseneck since those rides are going to get hard before too long. Today was one of those days where the wind seemed to be in my ace in every direction.. . Distance: 32.71 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 141, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 16.6 mph, Ave Power: 162 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,452.30 miles

September 8, 2012: Got out early today to knock off the ride as I have a busy day. Tough to get rides in after work these days, so the weekends are important to get out on. Was pretty nice this AM, even if it was a little humid. The winds kicked up towards the end of the ride so I was happy to be done early. . Distance: 28.50 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 158, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 17.8 mph, Ave Power: 190 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,419.59 miles

September 3, 2012: Crazy Vuelta stage today, made me want to go ride. Headed out and felt a little tired, but since I was only going to ride short, thought things would be OK. Got better as I went and I hammered on a couple hills, but then suddenly, I bonked big time. It was at that point that I remembered it was past lunch time and I probably should have eaten something before I went riding. Oh and the water bottle I thought was full was only half full. Oh well, some days are meant for suffering.. . Distance: 22.33 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 148, Ave Cadence: 71, Ave Speed: 17.1 mph, Ave Power: 172 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,391.09 miles

September 2, 2012: Watched the Vuelta Stage today before riding. Took it easy again, just enjoying the ride. I did push in a couple spots but then I also sat back and enjoyed the ride also. Not a lot of people out, but traffic was sure there around lunch time. One good thing about Labor Day is that the traffic goes back down. Distance: 26.64 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 152, Ave Cadence: 74, Ave Speed: 18.0 mph, Ave Power: 184 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,368.76 miles

September 1, 2012: Got a quick ride in this AM, been lazy lately and needed to get out for a ride even though it was short. Felt good, ride well. Distance: 23.62 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 18.5 mph, Ave Power: 197 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,342.12 miles

August 26, 2012: Another nice day for a ride. Decided to head over to Dartmouth and to visit Horseneck Beach area. .Didn't ride real hard, but still made descent time on the ride. Not much to report other than it was a good ride! Distance: 37.77 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 146, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.7 mph, Ave Power: 179 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,318.5 miles

August 25, 2012: Into the enjoyment riding season where I don't worry about how far or how fast I ride. I just ride for fun. Headed to Sakonnet Point to day and really ride well considering I wasn't really riding hard. Felt pretty good. Distance: 38.00 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 17.7 mph, Ave Power: 183 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,280.73 miles

August 19, 2012: First time riding since we got back from Utah. I had to take an extra couple days off to allow the antibiotics to work from my tooth abscess. Yes, the Tour de France tooth from 2005 seems to have dies and decided to go bad while I was in Utah. No matter, a drain hole drilled and a pile of penicillin and all seems to be better. In fact, I woke up this mooring feeling better than I have in many months making me wonder if I have been fighting this infection for quite a while. Felt pretty good riding, nice to actually have air when you ride. I think eventually the couple days off coupled with the antibiotics caught up with me but it was nice to ride again. I am getting the urge to run again already so I think I'll be mixing up my riding and running for the rest of the year. Distance: 20.67 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 158, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 18.1 mph, Ave Power: 186 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,242.73 miles

August 4, 2012: Glad I got out early today. was really warm and humid by the time I finished. I decided to ride hills in the heat in Northern Tiverton and then head to Sakonnet Point to get a longer ride. Need to prepare for next week somehow! I really felt pretty good today. I set a couple personal bests on the Strava climb segments by the river so that was good. Was nice to feel good riding which I really haven't the last two days. Ended up being a pretty slow ride but that was due to the heat and that I ran out of water. Once I stopped at a store in Little Compton, I felt energized again after filling my bottles, chugging some water and then pouring soem more over my head. Distance: 62.29 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 145, Ave Cadence: 70, Ave Speed: 15.5 mph, Ave Power: 169 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 2,000.56 miles

August 2, 2012:Was able to get a ride in after work. Was pretty windy out and when combined with the humidity, I really had my energy zapped pretty early in the ride. I battled through and got a descent ride in anyway. One time I was putting our 350 watts on a 0% gradient road and only making 17.8 mph! Tough day but nice to get a ride in. Distance: 21.91 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 149, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: 180 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,938.27 miles

August 1, 2012: Got a surprise ride in this afternoon, felt terrible but that isn't surprising considering how little I've ridden. I need to ride more in the next week to get ready for Utah. Distance: 29.95 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 17.5 mph, Ave Power: 176 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,916.36 miles

July 28, 2012: Really went out for an easy ride today, haven't been on the bike all week. Not the way to prepare for the Utah trip! Oh well, is what it is. Stupid cyclist of the day today .. saw a woman riding and talking on her cell phone ... really? Distance: 24.4 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 143, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 17.5 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,886.41 miles

July 22, 2012: Had a pretty good ride today, felt string and not a bad pace for the distance I rode. Slowed a lot in the 2nd half of the ride as I was into the wind a lot. Not as far along as I'd like to be, but I had more in the tank today when I finished. Today seemed to be loud groups of Harleys day ... Distance: 54.16 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.9 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,862.01 miles

July 21, 2012: Went out intending to ride 50 today but had a run in with a jerk in a SUV that spoiled my ride so I decided to cut it short. The jerk stopped in the middle of the road leading into Adamsville. Problem is I was screaming down the big hill and didn't know what he was going to do. Didn't want to pass him as he was just as likely to bolt left or right as start driving again. Instead, I came behind him and gave him the universal sign of you're #1 after a few seconds. Well he took offense so i explained that his mother was probably a dog and it went down hill from there ... no harm, no foul but the number of stupid drivers injuring cyclists seems to be increasing and I don't trust any of them. Everyone seems to be speeding and they are are testing or talking on the phone. Where are the cops that is what I'd like to know. Went for a motorcycle ride instead of riding long. Will try again tomorrow. Distance: 31.63 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.3 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,807.85 miles

July 14, 2012: Glad I got out early to ride as it got pretty warm this afternoon. I felt really good for 20-30 miles then started riding more hills and started getting aches. I did feel pretty good and had I had some more water, I think I would have been fine. Little disturbed, the rice cakes didn't sit well today ... more experimentation is needed I guess. Had some good hill climbs and some not so good climbs today. Distance: 52.60 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 15.9 mph, Ave Power: 178 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,776.22 miles

July 12, 2012: Have I mentioned how much I dislike riding after work? Seems to make even the easiest ride just a complete bear. Kept it short, couple hard efforts on some hills, but in general just an average days ride. Distance: 19.69 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 151, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: 191 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,723.62 miles

July 09, 2012: Uugh, definitely a quick recovery type ride today. My legs were like led pipes today riding after work. Also wanted to get home to try to fix my lawnmower. Quick (meaning short) ride was good though as every little bit helps. Oh an the lawnmower seems to have ben repaired so all is good. Distance: 15.13 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 138, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 17.7 mph, Ave Power: 176 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,703.93 miles

July 08, 2012: Pretty nice day for a ride, a nice breeze counteracting the warm temperatures. It was nice that the humidity seemed to be coming down a bit. Rode a pretty easy ride, although I started hammering up hills and set several PR's and missed a couple PR's by a few seconds. That is encouraging to me that maybe I am getting someplace finally this year. Distance: 30.18 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 144, Ave Cadence: 72, Ave Speed: 16.5 mph, Ave Power: 172 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,688.80 miles

July 07, 2012: Was a warm day today, although not that bad. The dew point was up again so it was swampy again. Rode reasonably hard but kept it short due to the heat. Probably should have ridden this AM, but wanted to watch the tour stage first. Distance: 21.82 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 148, Ave Cadence: 80, Ave Speed: 18.7 mph, Ave Power: 196 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,658.62 miles

July 05, 2012: Great ride today with Paul. Kept is slow and easy with the intention to put 4 hours in on the bike to help prep for Utah. As it turns out we did almost exactly that. Was really nice to head up to Lakeville and Freetown. The roads are great for riding and traffic was pretty low for the most part. Started war, but finished less humid if that makes sense. Time to catch up with the tour. Distance: 63.72 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 134, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 14.4 mph, Ave Power: 140watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,636.80 miles

July 04, 2012: Hot and humid day. Rode pretty well, had intended to ride hills after going to Sakonnet Point, but aborted that part of the ride due to the high Dew Points. Distance: 33.23 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 148, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 17.4 mph, Ave Power: 184 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,573.06 miles

July 03, 2012:Not a bad day for a ride, a little breezy but that helps a bit with the heat this time of the year. Had very little energy in my legs, but I was able to put forth a couple good efforts. All in all, not bad for a day after work ride. . Distance: 23.68 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 151, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 17.9 mph, Ave Power: 185 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,539.85 miles

July 01, 2012: Rode another quick ride this AM, wanted to get done before the heat set in and before the Tour stage was too far completed. Rode pretty hard for 18 or 19 miles, then relaxed a bit for the last couple. Felt pretty good but really need more miles at this point. . Distance: 22.18 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 79, Ave Speed: 18.3 mph, Ave Power: 202 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,516.17 miles

June 30, 2012: Wow, 10 days since I last rode. that just isn't right. Between bike issues and the heat and my back, I really just haven't been able to get it done. Rode descent all things considered. Thought i did alright climbing but that was slow also. Need to step it up in July.. Distance: 22.82 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 18.6 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,493.99 miles

June 20, 2012: The summer really kicked in today as it was a scorcher after work. 93 and 78 dew point when I left for a ride and not much better when I returned. Was still really great to ride as it's been so cool, I kind of enjoyed the heat or a change. Distance: 22.51 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 174, Ave Cadence: 80, Ave Speed: 17.5 mph, Ave Power: 174 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,473.17 miles

June 17, 2012: Had a bit more energy today so I set out with a partial plan, unsure how much I'd execute. Decided to ride reasonably hard down to Sakonnet Point the decide how to proceed afterwards. The wind was everywhere today, really blowing more easterly than north or south. As a result, felt like I was into the wind everywhere today. Turns out I rode pretty hard to 38 miles when I started climbing the hills in the downtown area. All in all pretty good day and while I was tired, I wasn't nearly as smashed as last weekends 74 miles. Oh and obviously the GPS altimeter was off by about 230 feet. Distance: 57.45 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 154, Ave Cadence: 72, Ave Speed: 16.2 mph, Ave Power: 179 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,450.66 miles

June 16, 2012: Good ride with Paul today, always nice to ride with someone. Makes the time go quickly and helps to make sure you get out and ride. Was a little windy, but still a nice day to get out. Not much else to say but still a lot of work to do to be able to enjoy Utah vs Suffer! Distance: 44.03 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 140, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 15.9 mph, Ave Power: 153 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,393.21 miles

June 14, 2012: Happy Flag Day ... crappy day at work, nice day, but felt like crap riding today. Tomorrow is another day. Distance: 20.46 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 143, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 16.9 mph, Ave Power: 168 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,349.18 miles

June 10, 2012: Really was tired and had nothing in my legs for most of the ride today. Guess I am not recovering as quickly as I have in the past. I think I got a littel dehyrdrated yetserdaya nd really didn't figure that out until today. On teh plus side it was a really nice day to ride, warm, littel wind and dry air. Wishh they were all like this one. Distance: 31.18 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 135, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 16.9 mph, Ave Power: 163 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,328.72 miles

June 9, 2012: Decided to try and ride longer today, but never intended to go as long as I ended up riding. Been looking for different rides so I started heading north through Westport and then cutting across into Hixville before cutting back south of RT 195 and heading around normal routes in Dartmouth/South Dartmouth. I started looping around normal rides and felt really good for the first 30 miles. The next 30 weren't too bad, but the last 10 started to get to me. I was pretty surprised to get to 74 miles and really I wasn't too wiped out, just a bit achy. In reality, i just was tired of sitting on that dam bike seat. Will go shorter tomorrow, but still should get a good ride in. Distance: 74.09 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.4 mph, Ave Power: 165 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,297.54 miles

June 7, 2012: I had to visit Dr. Al today to have my eye checkup so I decided to take the rest of the afternoon off. Thought it was going to be a bad decision because what was a beautiful day when I went into the Dr's office was looking really bad with Thunderstorms when I came out. I decided to wait it out at home, and sure enough the sun soon came back out. I decided to try riding in North Tiverton for the first time in the 15 years I've lived here because I saw another riders data on Strava that showed there were some good hills there. I have to say, there sure as hell are. Lot's of steep, short climbs. In particular Hilton street right on the Fall River border has a section of about 200 feet at 31%. Man was that a leg breaker. The good news is that I found a great place to ride to do a lot of climbing. It was also good that I made it home just before the next round of storms hit which really dumped on us! Distance: 25.45 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 158, Ave Cadence: 67, Ave Speed: 15.1 mph, Ave Power: 193 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,223.45 miles

June 3, 2012: Well after a couple busy and crappy weather days, I was able to get out this morning for a ride. Was a bit chilly and pretty windy so I felt like I was back riding in classics season. The wind was really a kicker in some spots and riding with my aero wheels was an adventure! I decided to try a new route so I rode briefly up into Westport north of RT177 and then looped back and forth around town. Need to get some longer rides in soon as August is coming up quickly! Distance: 33.01 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 18.3 mph, Ave Power: 198 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,198.00 miles

May 31, 2012: Surprisingly I was able to get out of work on time today and it was a great day temperature and sunny wise so I finally got a ride in on a week day. Rode pretty easy, but I did push it on a couple hills. The wind was stronger than I thought it was, but all in all a good day for a ride. Only saw a couple people riding. Pretty surprised at that. Distance: 26.21 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 18.4 mph, Ave Power: 192 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,164.99 miles

May 28, 2012:Got out early this AM as I decided to ride short but hard. Turns out rode really well for 10 miles then slowed speed wise but not power wise for last 5. Really hammered, about as fast as I can possible ride right now. I need to get back to riding hard, been slacking the last couple years and am noticing the fall off in performance. Distance: 15.13 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 167, Ave Cadence: 81, Ave Speed: 19.8 mph, Ave Power: 230 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,138.78 miles

May 27, 2012:Was another warm day, I guess summer is finally here, although it really doesn't get here for 3 weeks. I felt better riding today than I did yesterday, rode pretty hard for the first 30 minutes, then alternated between riding hard and cruising. There is only a little breeze, but it seems that I am riding into a strong wind. Must be getting soft as I get older. The last 30 minutes were pure torture. I just need to ride more, particularly as the weather warms. Distance: 37.2 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 160, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: 174 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,123.65 miles

May 26, 2012: The weather continues to be a mystery. Today was supposed to be hot, but it also turned into a swamp with high dew points. I guess I wasn't ready to ride in this weather as i was out of energy almost from the start of the ride. I guess it also could be from the fact that I just haven't been able to ride much lately. Distance: 30.6 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 160, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 16.1 mph, Ave Power: 164 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,086.45 miles

May 20, 2012:Today turned out to be one of the nicest days to ride this year so far. It was also the first time I was able to ride with Paul this season so it was a nice ride. We took it easy and spent most of the ride catching up and just general BS. Maybe we are finally turning the corner back to some nice riding weather. Distance: 41.41 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 128, Ave Cadence: 74, Ave Speed: 18.2 mph, Ave Power: 144 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,055.85 miles

May 19, 2012: Very nice day, warm, and just a little wind. Would have been a good day for a longer ride, but still have a lot of garden work to do around the yard and the grass really needed to be cut badly! Distance: 27.66 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 159, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 18.2 mph, Ave Power: 190 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 1,014.44 miles

May 18, 2012: Left work early today and was able to get a ride in. Was pretty nice out, although it was still a bit windy out. I felt good riding, but since I haven't been riding much really am not as fit as I'd like. Should be a couple days of riding with good weather. Distance: 27.36 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: 190 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 986.78 miles

May 13, 2012: Didn't sleep well last night and woke up too early not feeling great this AM. Really have no energy to do anything. Decided to go for an easy ride to try and snap out of it which really didn't do much. Can tell it's good weather, ran into a group of 10-12 riding is a very poorly organized pace line, half of them wearing Bikeworks kits. I don't mind the unorganized pace line even if they did come really close to hitting me. What irritates me is that after almost riding me into the gutter, they spread out 3 or more abreast on the busy roads, irritating drivers. I also watched them yell "clear" at an intersection then almost saw part of the group get hit by a car. Freaking s-show. That is why I have no interest in riding with bike shop groups. The usually have no clue how to ride safely. In the end, I still feel like crap today. Distance: 15.77 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 131, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.8 mph, Ave Power: 174 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 959.42 miles

May 12, 2012: Finally we had a break in the weather and and actual semi warm day out. Of course there has to be some wind, but it was a nice day to ride. Decided it was about time to break out my Madone so I did and it was so nice to ride after being on the climbing bike since last fall. Rode reasonably hard, but fought the wind all ride. Distance: 33.19 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 163, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 18.6 mph, Ave Power: 203 watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 943.65 miles

May 6, 2012: Didn't turn out to be the day it was supposed to be weather wise, but still pretty nice to ride. I went out pretty hard at the start of the ride and it just carried for the entire 30+ miles. Felt pretty good and I was really happy with how I felt. I don't think I've average 19+ mph for a 30 mile ride in a long time. Distance: 31.60 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 167, Ave Cadence: 80, Ave Speed: 19.2 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 910.46 miles

May 5, 2012: Well so April turned out to be a pretty dismal month for riding and May has started the same way. Today was a cold, rainy ride, but I needed to do something so I did. Not impressed with where I am riding any more, lost a lot of momentum due to crappy weather. .Distance: 20.71 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 77, Ave Speed: 17.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 878.86 miles

April 29, 2012: Really not liking the weather the last few days, chilly and windy. I think wee were really spoiled with the early nice weather and now we are getting normal weather that fells cold. Did a lot of yard work yesterday so I am very sore today. Because of that, decided to keep it short and easy today. .Distance: 20.64 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 144, Ave Cadence: 80, Ave Speed: 16.6 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 858.15miles

April 22, 2012: Was a foggy and misty morning where the weatherman says it was going to get worse all day so i decided to get out for a quick ride while I could. Wasn't too bad, but I actually put my flashing red light on my bag for safety in the fog. Decided to not ride too long as I couldn't see out my glasses due to fog and mist on them. Funny, the weather outside now looks to be improving ... but that wasn't supposed to be the case. Maybe I should have waited? .Distance: 20.42 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 161, Ave Cadence: 79, Ave Speed: 18.1 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 837.51miles

April 21, 2012: Day started out cloudy and foggy, but cleared up and became nice and sunny ... as long as you stayed away from the ocean. Was a bit windy too, although not that bad. Didn't ride very hard, but did push on a couple hills, can't wait for warm weather to return. Still a descent day riding. .Distance: 36.59 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 159, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 17.9 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 817.09 miles

April 16, 2012: Quick ride after work. Was pretty tired and not real motivated so this was definitly a recovery ride! .Distance: 20.66 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 134, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 17.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 780.50 miles

April 15, 2012: Was supposed to be a nicer day today than yesterday. Temperature wise it was warmer, but it was still pretty windy and the wind was cold. Rain never came in the morning, and the sun was only out for a short time, but all in all still a good day for a ride. Since I rode long yesterday, I decided to ride more hills today ... except I ended up riding longer than planned anyway. Oh well, all good training for the summer. I do think I am in better shape this year than last year at this time and I am finding my hill sprints are much better than they have been i can go further up the hill at a descent tempo before running out of steam. .Distance: 46.88 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 147, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 17.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 759.84 miles

April 14, 2012: Was nice to get outside again today after a long week. Weather was pretty good and I was able to get out pretty early .. 0900. Haven't ridden that early all year. It was good to get to South Dartmouth for the first time this spring and the ride was really great until I got near Horseneck Beach. Down there it was freezing cold with a string wild that sucked the life out of me! I stiffened up in the short mile or two near the water and every muscle that previously felt good hurt and ached. Didn't start to feel better until I ride a few more miles inland and it started to warm again. But that time, though I was mentally done so I just rode home. Still a great ride for this time of the year. .Distance: 60.43 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 157, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 17.5 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 712.96 miles

April 9, 2012: Felt really lousy when I left work today but it was fairly warm but windy out so I decided I needed to get ont he bike. Decided to keep the ride short, and easy so I chose to turn a fast cadence but keep the speed low. Was good to get out and I fell much better even if it was an easy ride. .Distance: 20.66 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 136, Ave Cadence: 83, Ave Speed: 17.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 652.53 miles

April, 7, 2012: Was a little chili this morning so I watched the Tour de Pais Vasco on TV, ran some errands and then went out and rode. Decided to not worry about distance but I wanted to ride some hills. I ended up looping around the Tiverton, taking in whatever hills I could think of. Good ride and I felt pretty good, although I never charged hard on any of the hills, just rode steady. It was an odd day. It was warm in the sun, cool in the shade and the wind was chilly. I dressed for the cold and roasted when riding hills and froze when going downhill or into the wind. The GPS was way our of whack today, I didn't ride that much below sea level, there must have been a drastic change in pressure since I last rode.Distance: 33.77 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 156, Ave Cadence: 67, Ave Speed: 15.2 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 631.87 miles

April 4, 2012: Was able to get out of work at a descent hour today and that let me get out for a ride. Was pretty nice day except for the wind which made the 5 mile ride home from Adamsville a real challenge. Was one of those rides where I'd put everything into it and only be able to make 15 or 16 miles and hour max. Still, nice to get out for a ride. Distance: 26.16 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 150, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 17.7 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 598.10 miles

April, 1 2012: Little chili today compare to what I have been riding in the last couple weeks. Decided to keep the ride short because of that. I rode fairly hard and felt pretty good, although I really would like to be back in shorts. Maybe next weekend. Distance: 23.68 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 155, Ave Cadence: 78, Ave Speed: 19.1 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 571.94 miles

March 29, 2012: Today was really an EPIC ride. Was fortunate to be able to stop and ride Mt Baldy on the way back from San Diego to Los Angeles for the flight home. We parked at the base of Glendora Mountain Road in a dirt lot just past the equestrian area that seemed to be popular with riders. The ride up Glendora Mountain Road was steady but not overly difficult. Kept a reasonable pace but didn't push it due to total climb expected. The road was beautiful and had very low traffic. Next we crossed onto Glendora Ridge Road which was rolling and smooth with fantastic views (except for the smog) and finally into Mt Baldy village where the torture started. The climb to the ski area was pure torture, starting at 8 % and increasing over the distance to about 15%. Normally this would be hard, but after 20 miles of climbing, I have to say I hadn't suffered like this since the Zoncolon. After stopping at a bar back in Mt Baldy for a coke and water refill, we traversed back along the initial route. The descent along the ridge and back to the car was simply the best I have ever ridden with high speed banked turns, and zero traffic you could take the switchbacks at very high speeds. We even saw a fox on the side of the road who watched us fly by. This ride is a classic, and the most Euro ride I've done in the states. Unfortunately my GPS battery died after about 40 miles so I lost all by the initial part of the ride data wise. We were well over 7,000 ft of climbing last time I looked before the battery quit. The whole ride took us about 4:30 minutes. Distance: 51.0 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 159, Ave Cadence: N/A, Ave Speed: 9.4 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 548.26 miles

March 28, 2012: Couldn't get out of work earliy enough to do a longer ride, so decided to make a quick loop up Pt Loma at lunch including a ride down to the tidal pools on the NW side of the point. Really nice ride and good short climbs, but I really am not a fan of city riding. Distance: 15.39 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 141, Ave Cadence: N/A, Ave Speed: 13.4 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 497.26 miles

March 27, 2012: Taking advantage of the rental bikes, today I was able to ride another great loop after work in the San Diego area. Actually it was about 45 minutes east of San Dirgo in Pine Valley. The ride heads south along the highway, then climbed Kitchens Creek Road which turns into a closed fire road. There was no traffic and spectacular scenery. All in all an awseom ride and one of my favorites ever. Distance: 28.58 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 151, Ave Cadence: N/A, Ave Speed: 12.1 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 481.87 miles

March 26, 2012: Took the opportunity to rent bikes on a trip to LA and San Diego and was able to ride Mt Palomar on the way between the two. When ever I get to climb this mountain it always seems to be cold and today didn't disappoint. The was a little snow on the ground but no where near like the last time. I was able to see the beautiful views on this ride and see why it is so popular. I found the climb much more challenging than I did last time I climbed it, although my time was only 3 minutes slower. The descent was cold. Distance: 26.66 miles, Ave Heart Rate: N/A, Ave Cadence: N/A, Ave Speed: 10.2 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 453.29 miles

March 24, 2012: Burr, it was cold out today .. all the way down to 53 when I left the house. Actually wasn't that bad, rode in shorts and thermal shirt. Would have been OK if not for the wind and cloud cover. I'd get chilly when I got above 18 mph. Anyway, only sort of motivated to ride today, but since I didnt yesterday, I needed to get soemthing in. We'll see how the weather plays out in CA next week. Kind of strange, but hopefuly we'll be able to get soem rides in after/in/around work out there. Distance: 26.5 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 140, Ave Cadence: 72, Ave Speed: 17.8 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 426.63 miles

March 22, 2012: Decided to take it slow today and was going to ride a little longer than would after work, but about 5 miles out the wind and fog came in and it was like pea soup. Decided to ride back towards the sun and since I was cold, decided to hammer a bit. When I got back to Adamsville, it was nice out again, but felt a little chillier than when I left home. Decided to make a loop and call it a short day. Still good ride and I am feeling good riding, even though the speed isn't high. I started riding very casually. That is encouraging even though I have about 5-10 pounds I can't get rid of. Distance: 22.46 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 143, Ave Cadence: 76, Ave Speed: 18.3 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 400.13 miles

March 21, 2012: Day off from work today to take care of something this morning. Took whole day figuring I could get a ride in this afternoon because it was supposed to be nice out. Was pretty overcast and little foggy in the AM, little better around noon when I left. About half way through the ride, the skies cleared and it warmed up nicely. In fact, had sweat rolling off my forehead for the first time this year from the warmth. I also didn't bring enough water. Guess I need to pay attention to that now that it is warmer and I am riding longer distances. Felt alright today, although was a little tired when done. Distance: 44.62 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 151, Ave Cadence: 72, Ave Speed: 18.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 377.67 miles

March 20, 2012: Little cooler than yesterday, but still a nice day for a ride after work. Didn't feel quite as good as yesterday, but still had a good ride despite riding into a stiff wind. Felt like I was riding slowly, but in the end, it wasn't that bad a ride. I can tell I took it easy based on my average heart rate, but overall speed wasn't bad. Looking forward to another good ride tomorrow. Distance: 27.90 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 144, Ave Cadence: 74, Ave Speed: 18.1 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 333.05 miles

March 19, 2012: Another spectacular day, pretty warm, was 67 when I got home from work. Was able to get in 30+ mile riding in shorts which is phenomenal for after work in March. Felt really good riding, was able to hammer up hills and really had energy left after I got home. Had to cut ride short as I felt the sun was getting too low to safely be visible to traffic. Distance: 30.75 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 153, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 18.4 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 305.15 miles

March 17, 2012: Happy St. Patricks Day, and not a terribly bad day to ride. Except it never cleared up early like it was suposed to so I rode dressed warm and still froze. I guess I am used to the warm sun because 50 and sunny is OK, 50 and cloudy is freezing cold! Oh well, good ride, didn't really push hard, but still felt pretty good. I was tired but could have ridden more which is a good sign. I also had energy to push up hills at the end which is another good sign. We'll see how I do riding tomorrow up in MA. Distance: 40.56 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 158, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 274.40 miles

March 14, 2012: Well the good news is that I was able to get out for a ride today after work. The bad news is that the temperature was dropping quickly just as predicted by the weathermen. Dam, I hate when they are right and its not what I want to happen! I still got out in fairly comfortable weather. Cut the ride short due to the sun getting low in the sky and also the temps cooling off making the wind chilly. I also felt like I was riding in sticky paper again, because I was smart enough to wear leggings when I rode today. Glad I did as it would have been cold without them. But hey, it's still an outside ride vs a trainer day! Distance: 22.27 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 152, Ave Cadence: 74, Ave Speed: 17.7 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 233.84 miles

March 12, 2012: Made sure to leave work on time today as it was a beautiful day out, temperature was 62 degrees when I got home. Nice enough that I was able to ear my new bib shorts for the first time this year. I did wear a thermal shirt which I am glad for because when I crossed the thermal line in Dartmouth, the cold ocean wind was exactly that .. cold. Felt really really good riding, and hammered at 20 mph for 20 miles then pulled back for the last 10. Also set a King of the Mountain on Hix Bridge Road and a personal best on another Starva segment. Today, without all that winter clothing, I feel like the Sufferfest Training program really worked! Had to cut short my ride a little bit as some clouds that looked like rain were coming in and since they were starting to obscure the sun, it was feeling a little dark. A good day for riding and it looks like I should be able to get something in all week! Distance: 30.93 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 158, Ave Cadence: 73, Ave Speed: 18.7 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 211.57 miles

March 9, 2012: Was a little chilly today compared to the last few days, but at least I was able to get home and get out for a ride. Felt pretty lousy for a lot of the ride, obvious I hadn't ridden a lot the last few days and not a lot over the last few weeks. In the end, it was a good day for a ride, not too cold and very little winds which was nice. Maybe I'll get out again Sunday. Distance: 23.81 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 152, Ave Cadence: 75, Ave Speed: 16.5 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 180.64 miles

March 3, 2012: Rainy start to the day, watched Strade Bianche. The storm cleared in the afternoon and it was pretty warm so I decided to go for a ride. The roads were pretty sand covered but it was still nice riding in descent temperatures. Wasn't pushing too hard, but felt good. Got to the top of one of the hills out of Adamsville and felt the tire going flat. No bog deal right just change it and we're good. Not so fast, the change went well, but when I went to fill it with air, I noticed that the flask didn't have threads and I needed a threaded flask. No problem, I have another and guess what, it also wasn't threaded. Walked back down the hill and then learned that you can ride a flat tire for 6 miles if you are careful. Not a fun ride in the end! Distance: 11.3 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 152, Ave Cadence: N/A, Ave Speed: 17.6 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 156.83 miles

February 17, 2012: Well, it's been a couple weeks since it was warm enough to ride outside, but the weather really hasn't been bad. Was nice enough today to get outside for a ride when I got out of work early. Was about 50 degrees, with damp roads from the rain last night, but the sun was just breaking through when I got home. No real wind, although there were a couple spots/directions when I notices it. When the sun would go behind the clouds, it did get a little chilly. Between outdoors miles and trainer miles, this is the furthest I'm been ever riding at this time of the year. Distance: 29.0 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 151, Ave Cadence: N/A, Ave Speed: 16.7 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 145.53 miles

January 28, 2012: This has been a pretty mild winter, last Saturday we got 11 inches of snow, it all melted by Tuesday and today, Saturday, I was able to get another ride in outside. Pretty nice all together. The roads are a bit tough because of all the sand on the roads from last weekend, but all in all not too bad. Only had one issue and that was with wheel spin on Colebrook Road going up the big hill. Was thinking of another 10 miles, but it got chilly when the sun went behind some clouds. This is easily the most miles total ever for a January. Distance: 33.89 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 141, Ave Cadence: 70, Ave Speed: 16.3 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 116.53 miles

January 7, 2012: Amazing, another January ride. First time I ever have two rides in January. Curious if we'll be like this all winter. That would be great, this periodic outside riding really helps take the edge off the trainer. Today was a little chilly when I left home so I dressed for a chilly ride even though it was over 50 outside. After about an hour, I realized I might have been slightly over dressed, but I'd rather be warm than cold as I was on New Years Day. Was a little windy down by the water, but otherwise a nice ride. Not sure we'll get the chance again, but this winter seems to be pretty mild. Distance: 42.72 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 144, Ave Cadence: 62, Ave Speed: 16.0 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 82.64 miles

January 1, 2012: Well, surprise, got a New Years Day ride in for the second time in 2 years! Was pretty nice today, not a lot of wind at the start of the ride so it was good. I didn't wear boots and I probably should have as my feet were frozen by the time I was done. Even though it was pretty warm, it was damp so that offset the temperature a bit. Lots of cyclists out because I think there was a New Years ride for the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen. The only good thing is the losers don't come out when it's cold so the group seemed to be better behaved that the summer rides are! Getting cold tomorrow so I think it's the trainer for the next couple months, but you never know Distance: 39.92 miles, Ave Heart Rate: 148, Ave Cadence: 61, Ave Speed: 15.3 mph, Ave Power: N/A watts, Cumulative 2012 Miles: 39.92 miles
